This
one act piece was composed for the compulsory test at Moscow's
Conservatory of Music. This opera was premiered in the Bolshoy
Theater in Moscow, the Opera House in London, and in New York.
Tchaikovski praised Aleko
and compared it to Cavalleria Rusticana for their structural
similarities. Rachmaninov's inspiration was Alexandar Pushkin's poem Gypsies,
composing an opera which has seen performances than his musically
superior operas.

Premda Rahmanjinov nije prvenstveno poznat kao operni
skladatelj ipak se svi slažu da je u partiturama njegovih opera
''ponešto od najbolje glazbe koju je skladao''. Osobito to vrijedi
za Aleko koju je jako volio Čajkovski i najčešće ju, zbog
strukturalnih sličnosti uspoređivao s Leoncavallovom Cavaleria
rusticana. Rahmanjinov je za temu uzeo poemu Aleksandra Puškina
Cigani. Aleko, mladić koji na strasan i uvjerljiv način
propagira nesputan život i slobodnu ljubav, stradavat će početi
kad tim načelima pridruži gorljivu posesivnost. Ali, Rahmanjinov
će ga i tada slikati s velikim simpatijama, dajući u Aleku
po prvi put veliki zamah svom melodijskom stilu i sjajno orkestriravši
ovu jednočinku.
