Conor McPherson > THE WEIR > Director: Borna Armanini > In a small bar in rural Ireland, four locals, wishing to impress a woman who arrived from town, tell ghostly and horrible local events, chiefly of the house where the woman has stayed. Ease by which they pass over discomfort and fear growing in the woman is interrupted by her story, more intimate and less superficial than theirs. Then everything is changed, and reckless young men become her fellow sufferers, while indifferent superiority is replaced by deep sympathy. This is a drama of unbearable superficiality toward other people whom we judge by our own prejudices. McPherson belongs to those authors who do not follow fashion; he is not interested in the degradation of man to bestiality in the guise of unrestrained freedom. He dares say that a real touch, the human one, is possible – if we give it a chance. Drama “The Weir” was first performed at London Royal Court Theatre in 1999 and had great success both in Europe and Broadway. The Split performance is its Croatian première.
