PAOLO MAGELLI is, according to some people, a controversial figure, according to others an intellectual or a cosmopolite, but everybody agrees upon the fact that he is the most intriguing director in Croatia today. He was born 50 years ago in Prato and is very proud of his tuscan ancestry. Thirty years ago he has graduated from directing in Firenze. By misunderstanding studied slavistics. And there comes a Slav.Then, as a part of '68 generation, he locks himself in firentinian Metastasi with rebellious local actors and was a witness to «crushing of italian left». When he was offered a scholarship outside Italy he chose Romania because at that time to him their directorial theatre seemed the most interesting in Europe. He was staging brilliant performances in Belgrade and Zagreb for many years, but he could not live from it. He assures his material egzistence by staging plays in Germany, Switzerland, France and Slovenia. His directing of performances such as «Danton's death», «Elektra», «Big magic», «Faith, hope and love», «Mad Days», «Nation», «The Cherry Orchard», «Three Sisters», «Uncle Vanya», «A Month in the Countryside» are considered to be antological. His performances are eagerly awaited by the public and the critics. |
