Citadela is a
word describing a fort, an outpost. A space which forms part of a town, yet detached. The
hermeticism of the space creates a strong need to be set free at all levels: instinctive,
emotional, intellectual, spiritual. Is Diocletian's palace Ismailian's Citadela? And which of its layers fallen asleep a long time ago will be uncovered? How much passion will it draw out of the blue oblivion of the Mediterranean? |

CITADEL Symbolic meaning of the word citadel is almost identical in all civilisations, cultures and religions. It stands for Soul, namely that what makes us part of the Divine. Explaining the concept of fortress J. Chevalier and A. Gheerbrant in Dictionary of Symbols say that it is generally a symbol of one’s inner shelter, cave of the heart and a privileged place of communication between soul and divinity or absolute… In psalms: the God of Israel is our fortress (46, 11); But I will sing about your strength; every morning I will sing aloud of your constant love. You have been a refuge for me, a shelter in my time of trouble. I will praise you, my defender. My refuge is God, the God who loves me (59, 16 – 17) Who, O God, will take me into the fortified city? (60, 9) In Bhagavad Gita a fortress with nine gates is the image of yogi’s body which is closed towards the outer perceptions: therefore it preserves the inner concentration of the spirit (5, 13). Taoist discourse on golden flower recommends that Primary Castle should be fortified and defended, one which is, according to zen terminology, a place of sing, of spirit and of one’s own nature.
The very choice of titles reveals the circle of Gagik Ismailian’s interests. He is going to take us to the journey through citadel as the cognizance of the world through the process of self-cognizance travelling form East to West. Being present in the common brutality of the factual, contradictions of two ancient cultures will reveal itself through symbols and associations that remain open for our own interpretations. A journey, either to the top or to the bottom (which is subject of our own decision) all the way to the point in which we are thrown out of balance and out of control – where all nine gates of our fortress are open. That is the itinerary of Gagik Ismailian’s performance. Travel towards ultimate liberation, regardless of how big are the sacrifices that we have offered.
Citadel is the journey from East to West. Journey to our inner selves, spiritual quest, a search for the root, meaning of existence. It is a patchwork of feelings. Violence and brutality of the facts are the mainstream. It is a gentle collision of distant and old cultures blending fable and pastoral, evolving symbols, dreams, nightmares and mysteries. It is a ritual. Gagik Ismailian Citadel is a ritual composed of passion, of sun, of dance. |
