Magician: O my emperor, the brightest Diocletian, in a very few moments your astral universe will flash before my eyes in its devine entireness. |
written by: NIKOLA ČELAN Cast: Mladen Badovinac
In its recent past Croatia experienced the war disaster. Dalmatia - its southern very narrow, part got isolated bacause of the war operations and extremely difficult geo-strategical position. Therefore, the atmosphere in the center of Dalmatia, Split, became very tense, and so Split became well-known as the biggest narco-center in Croatia. That is the basic of our play. Baš-concrete and Society Pillars approaches this problem using the perspective of absurd-comedy, like in Monty Python's Flying Circus. The author also used the form of fairy tale, finding the story of a very popular slavic fairy tale Baš-Čelik (Baš-Steel) very interesting to make a platform, on which he built a satirical structure towards society, the world and the actors themselves. Even though most of jokes in the play are based on the distorsions of the narko-slang of our town, the shaw is percepted as a successful, abstract vision of the fairy tale, that functions very acceptably without understanding the words. The story of a mason family-father and three sons, the archaic curse - a monster sent by Diocletian, the Roman emperor, founder of Split, some 1700 years ago, to punish the future citizens of Split for putting the concrete into his palace, by bringing them the evil of heroin, becomes physically as funny as in its verbal aspects. The main point is followed by the paralel lines of the basics of two types of powder: dope and cement, which are, at the end, mixed and injected into the bodies of three sons who, therefore, become stoned, in every way. The play is full of musical numbers: rap, punk, cabaret, flamenco, techno, Dalmatian traditional music and chanson, even the waltz, can-can and film music - all of them performed by voices of seven mail actors (three of them are numbers of well known hip-hop group The Beat Fleet) and the piano. It contains some interactive parts and many solo-performances. Except for the piano, the scene entirely consists of seven chairs.

Diocletian: And so it will, shaman. I paid hell of a gold to Fenikian usurers to get you the best African stuff money can buy. Evocate gods for help. Let them overwhealm with visions that will make my royality happy. And be careful! If you get a bad trip, you will be dirested to the lions. |
Magician: Gods will help me not to betray your royal confidence, and to make my trip full of flowers, like those your subjects use to overwhealm your scentful feet, o the greatest face from Mesipothamy to Hercules' pillars. |
|
Diocletian: When it comes to Hercules' pillars, I'm going to order them to fit my royal palace on the Adriatic coast. How many ships does it take to transport them? |
Magician: Just a moment, your brightness, the noble Mercury is just overwhealming me with totally crazy visions. I think this will be a very good trip. |
|
Diocletian:
Talk to me, o my stoned shaman, just talk to me! |
The Wawes of the Adriatic sea are splashing them. I see some beautiful women passing by. I can smell the sulphur from the sanatorium... Just a minute... What's that? |
Diocletian: What? What did you see? |
