CHAMBER THEATRE (CLOSED DRAMA STAGE)

by Ivan Bošković

Apart from the regular programmes of the Croatian National Theatre and the standard repertoire performed on the stage, plays of a more chamberistic nature, the so-called closed drama pieces, wers performed on smaller stages and became a significant part of the production.

The foundation of the "Chamber Scene" on 6th of June 1957 marked the inception of this kind of production, on which occasion Sartre's "Behind a Closed Door" was performed, with Rudolf Bunk appearing in the roles of the director, scenery and costume designer. Until 1964, when its activity ceased, five plays had been produced and the number of performances had mounted to seventy-six.

After a two year break the activity was resumed in 1966 by establishing a closed drama studio called "AkromÇ. The third in a series of similar attempts was made by Marko Fotez, a director who initiated the so-called "Literary Scene" in 1967, the very name suggesting its programme policy and general orientation. However, like other similar initiatives it did not last long and finally stopped working in 1967.

There have been several attempts towards restoring the closed drama performances in Split, some being made by actors of the Croatian National Theatre, but unfortunately with little or no success. Despite the fact that none of these chamber studios has survived, they have made a considerable contribution towards enriching and diversifying the theatrical life in Split.
