SCENERY AND COSTUME DESIGN

by Nevenka Bezić-Božanić

Before the First World War the professions of scenery and costume designers had been virtually non-existent at the Split Theatre. It was rather a group of people in charge of the visual side of a production, from conceptual items to the actors' requisites and other paraphernalia. The first permanent scenery designer appeared in 1921 in the person of Ivo Tijardović who, also being a composer and a librettist, was otherwise a prominent theatrical figure. The first professional scenery designer was Milan Tolić, who was active from 1924 to as late as 1974, the continuity being broken several times due to disbandment of the troupe. After the Second World War the outstanding work of the Split Theatre. This was also the time when a number of prominent Croatian painters were engaged either permanently (like Rudolf Bunk) or occasionally. Mijo Adžić has been a permanently employed scenery designer ever since 1964, with numerous guest appearances of renowned artists.

It was not until after the Second World War that professional costume designers were engaged in the theatre in Split, and then only as occasionally visiting guest artists. Since 1973, however, Najda Kromić-Božinović has been a permanent professional costume designer, being joined by Marija Žarak in 1980.

A number of open air stages, around which the Split Summer Festival has centred, have at the same time considerably contributed to the development of the scenery design in Split. This is particularly true of Diocletian's Peristyle and Carrara Square.
