MARULIĆ'S DRAMA FESTIVAL |
"Marulić's Days", a festival of Croatian drama, is a part of a wider cultural event organized and centred around the work of Marko Marulić, a writer justly considered to be the father of the Croatian literature. Within this festival of Croatian drama, initiated and organized by the Croatian National Theatre in Split, three events have so far been held on which occasion the most successful dramatic productions in Croatia have been performed under the name of ßMarulić's DaysÇ. The first drama festival, which took place in 1991, was marked by two plays, both directed by Georgij Paro: "Exercising of Life" by Fabrio and Gašparović and "BannersÇ by Miroslav Krlea. The event, however, pointed to a shortage of contemporary Croatian plays, which induced the organizer to establish a permanent contest for plays written in the Croatian language. At the second festival in 1992 the most successful production was undoubtedly the one of "KraljevoÇ by Miroslav Krleža, directed by Vito Taufer and performed by the dramatic ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre "Ivan Zajc" from Rijeka. It was in that year that a Croatian radio drama survey was introduced, thus contributing to the entire festival. The play "Wolves", written by Milutin Cihlar-Nehajev, was proclaimed to be the most successful one at the third festival of "Marulić's DaysÇ in 1993. Being the only festival of this kind on the Croatian dramatic scene, "Marulić's DaysÇ has indisputably proved to be an event of utmost significance for the entire cultural life in Croatia |
