THE PERIOD PRECEDING By Zdeslav Perković |
Out of several reconstructions of the building over the past hundred years, namely in 1921, 1935, 1940 and 1979, it is the latest one that the author particularly concentrates on. After the fire in1970 nine years had elapsed before the building was reopened. Several plans had been put forward by the main architect of the reconstruction, Professor Božidar Rašica. |
After a public discussion the plan, according to which the former appearance of the building was to be retained, won general support and was accepted. After the reconstruction, during which the scenery techniques and effects were improved and the space for the audience rearranged, the theatre in Split was restored to its original function in 1979. Unfortunately, the second stage in which the space on the west side of the building formerly used as a gas plant was to have been restored and put to use, has not even commenced so far and has been delayed for the past twenty years, although the theatre could use the premises for workshops and the closed drama stage. The reason for this delay is the fact that any investment from the theatre’s own income would be far from sufficient without additional financial means. |
