CHARACTERS

DESA Remnant of prison officials from previous system. She was upgraded from prison guard into chief of KZD (Cultural-entertainm.) of the same object. In favour of hard work , but likes a good song. Prisoners and those who are not all awake motherly instincts in her. Dreams about them staying with her forever. Sing in band. Has no file.

ZDENKA Social worker from a nice family. Sings in prison band because she cannot resist. Her open wish is that they become better people. She is afraid of love, but loves Pljuga. She knows it's forbbiden fruit, she knows it is not wise, but – again – she cannot resist. Has no file.

PIRO Person from the «outside» which distinguishes him from the others. Stubborn in wish to do something with his life, which he cannot do. Instead of that he casually becomes an organizer of other people's destinies which he, by pure chance again, leads into destruction. However, his egzistence does not become tragic because of that because he does not even notice it. Does not have a file.

EVA Not at all strange. On the contrary. Claims to be studying sociology and antropology. Does not support violent behaviour. Always realizes what is happening and where she is too late. Has no file.

CNT Split backyard

CHARACTERS

GYPSY Fifteen kids, unknown address. Worried about ecological catastrophies. In search of his tribe, becomes a victim of modern urbanization which he does not understand and does not accept. If by any chance he was born a Croat, he'd be the president of the green party. Like this, he's in prison for unlawful break and entry in, of course, somebody else's appartment. He finds comfort in singing. He likes birds and thinks he's a musician. He plays everything.

RADE A Serb from the vicinity of Knin. Migrated to Zagreb in his earliest youth. He claims being a purger (born and bred inhabitant of Zagreb). In prison because of small case of tax evasion. Unhappily divorced, father to two children. Actor.Wants to operate his nose in order to be more handsome . In favour of legalization of light drugs. Spiritus movens and expert for planning escape which never happens. Plays guitar.

PLJUGA Gentle agressive person from county of Šibenink-Knin. Has violent mood swings. In love with social worker. In prison because of destruction and robbing of property . One night he got angry with a kiosk and tore it apart with bare hands, but did not take away anything, he's not the type. Passerbyes took it all, but he was accused. He'd like to be a folk star once he leaves the prison circle. Plays drums.

ŽIR He's not from Zagreb, but he'd like to be. He tries to mask his «shortcoming» by lousy kajkavian dialect. on which he insists. In moments of emotional crisis he cannot control his «pure» kaj so he starts speaking the language of his native land. In prison because of traffic accident. Since then he does not drink. Often. Only occasionally. Does not have anything against Desa. Most of all, he'd like to have the gift of absolute hearing.

FLEKICA Has completed two universities. In spite of that, he's an intellectual-practical person. He's always wanted to be a tram driver, but because of family pressure he became a critic. Smarter than the others, but thus suffers more. In youth, without reason fond of forbbiden poems. Has encountered closely with uniformed people on several occasions. In prison because of attack on an official who has arrived on thirteenth call by neighbours to switch off electricity. Plays electrical guitar.

ĆIRTO An example of a person who uses where he lives very well .Instead of medals on his chest, he's burdened by remorse. After that war, he is now waging a war in himself. The problem is when his inner struggles leave him uncontrollably and destroy everything in his surrounding. He leaves behind the question is he a «bad guy» or somebody else.

PRISONER (political?) Incarcerated. The reason unknown. Talks little. Is unknown where he comes from. Isn't allowed to play in band out of unknown reasons. In the end stays alive by irony of fate.

AT LAST SOMETHING THAT IS NOT REVOLUTIONARY, SOMETHING THAT IS, WE COULD SAY QUITE OPENLY, COMPLETELY SENSELESS, SOMETHING LIKE A GOOD MIXTURE OF EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST…. TURN THE RADIO ON……….WE'LL KNOW HOW TO RESPECT WHAT THE BAND BIRDIES DID FOR US…..THEY'RE PEOPLE, ARTISTS, CIRCUS, SHOW BUSINESS, SONG, POEM AND EPIC AND THEY WILL HELP US FIND IDENTITY THAT WAS SO SOUGHT AFTER AND LOST….THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL LIFT OUR DEEPLY BURRIED OPTIMISM, OUR MORALE WILL BE

From July 2000, when it was first staged for the 46^th Split Summer this show, which does not come off the stage, successfully adjusts to new stages and becoming an undeniable repertory hit. It has traveled to mostly all croatian festivals and a number of world festivals, and the artistic team and actors, as well as the writer of the piece have received many awards for their creation. After its premiere in Split, Birdies has been translated into several languages and has been staged outside of Croatia, in Germany, Bosnia and Hercegovina…
